Why has it taken a decade to build a new bridge in Canary Wharf? | FT #shorts

A decade after planning began, the South Dock Bridge still exists only on paper.⁠

Running from the main Canary Wharf estate in east London to the South Quay area, the footbridge is expected to eventually accommodate 85,000 people a day, making it the city’s second-busiest pedestrian crossing.⁠

But £2.3mn has been spent on planning and consultancy since 2019, and the original construction start date of 2023 is long gone, with officials saying its cost has now risen by a quarter to £25mn because of ‘external economic factors’, explains the FT’s Georgina Quach.⁠
