New road-building projects worth around $2.7tn are under way around the world. While developing nations need the improved infrastructure, the wealthiest countries also keep adding to their road networks. But road transport is already responsible for around 12 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions globally, so can we balance this expansion with challenging net zero targets?
