Peru’s Amazon under threat: Industry blamed for massive land loss

Peru, home to the second-largest Amazon region after Brazil, is facing a devastating environmental crisis. Illegal deforestation, fueled by cattle ranching, mining, and drug trafficking, is destroying vast swathes of rainforest each year. The once-thriving ecosystem is rapidly degrading, threatening biodiversity and local communities. Environmental groups warn that if unchecked, this loss could accelerate climate change impacts worldwide.

Al Jazeera’s Mariana Sanchez reports from Pucallpa in the Peruvian Amazon.
